Brief Bio:

Elena Pian graduated in Physics at Bologna University in 1990 and obtained her PhD in Astrophysics at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA/ISAS, Trieste, Italy) in 1994. After a post-doctoral experience at the Space Telescope Science Institute (Baltimore, Maryland, 1995-1997) she joined the research staff of Bologna Observatory, which is part of the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), as a member of the BeppoSAX satellite team. In 2000 she moved to Trieste Observatory where she served as an astronomer for 13 years, before returning to Bologna, where she is a professor since 2017. In 2009-2017 she was a visiting professor at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy. In August 2018 she became President of Division D (High Energy Phenomena and Fundamental Physics) of the International Astronomical Union. In September 2018 she was awarded the “Giuseppe Occhialini” prize and medal of the Italian Physical Society and the British Institute Of Physics for her detection of r-process nucleosynthesis in the optical/infrared counterpart of the binary neutron star merger detected by the gravitational interferometers Ligo and Virgo on 17 August 2017.
